题目:Computer tools to enhance human creativity in design
Abstract:This research brings together theoretical and empirical knowledge from cognitive psychology, computer science and engineering to get a deep understanding of the mechanics of design ideation with the aim of developing effective methods of facilitating creative solutions to engineering design problems. Design ideation is neither monolithic nor linear; it is multi-faceted and dynamic, influenced by problem complexity and novelty, designer expertise, objectives, constraints and resources available.   As well, the state of understanding of the problem evolves, as does the state of the solutions, through continuous cognitive operations and application of domain knowledge. We have developed a web based Holistic Ideation Testbed as our experimental apparatus. It encompasses a wide range of intuitive and experiential ideation tools and databases,
There are two main elements to consider: the designer’s cognitive strategies and the domain knowledge in all its modalities. As the designer moves through different cognitive states, the design concepts generated also move through different states. The former involves characterizing and tracking the designers cognitive processes (cognitive informatics); the latter involves semantic structures for networking multi-modal domain knowledge (artifactual informatics).
Bio:Jami J. Shah is Professor, Faculty of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and Director of Design Automation Lab at Arizona State. He earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Design from Ohio State in 1984. Prior to his academic career he worked in industry for 6 years, designing mechanical equipment and chemical machinery. His research areas include: Design theory, design education, DfM/DfA, CAD/geometric computing, AI & Design Informatics systems and computational metrology. He is the co-author of 2 US patents, 2 books, and 250+ peer reviewed technical papers in professional journals and conferences. He is the founding chief editor of ASME Transaction, the Journal of Computing & Information Science in Engineering (JCISE) of which he was Chief Editor from 2001-2010.He is currently Area Editor of Research in Engineering Design andCo-Chief Editor of Journal of Computational Design & Engineering. He was elected Fellow of ASME in 2001. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2008 ASME Design Automation award, Siemens Engineering Education Excellence Award 2009, Ohio State Outstanding Alumnus Award 2003 and the ASME CIE Lifetime Achievement Award.
