Title：Design Knowledge Modelling and Retrieval for Next-Generation Collaborative Knowledge Management Systems
Abstract：Engineering design is a knowledge-intensive process. Undoubtedly, the effective and efficient capture and re-use of design knowledge can help enterprises improve decision making, retain competitive advantages and facilitate innovation generation. Nowadays, the design and development of complex products such as aircrafts and high-speed trains is increasingly multi-disciplinary, highly-collaborative and highly-contextual. This raises several challenges that current research on knowledge management for engineering design has yet to address. Firstly, most knowledge capture methods emphasise a retrospective approach, which results in a loss of rich design context and leads to development of really intrusive knowledge capture tools. Secondly, the contextual knowledge in designers’ collaborative work process is missing from the knowledge objects they exchange during the process, which makes the knowledge captured difficult to re-use. Thirdly, advanced retrieval methods for design knowledge are not available apart from keyword-based search – something that becomes increasingly valuable as design knowledge records accumulate. In this presentation, I am going to talk about recent work I have done in developing some key technologies to address these challenges for next-generation collaborative knowledge management systems. Specifically, the development of a number of advanced retrieval algorithms will be discussed in detail. In addition, the modelling and retrieval of design knowledge for intelligent and collaborative knowledge management systems will be introduced.
Bio: Dr. Hongwei Wang is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at School of Engineering, University of Portsmouth where he coordinates the Design Engineering Group. Prior to joining Portsmouth, he completed a PhD from the Engineering Design Centre at Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge between 2007 and 2010. He got a MSc and a BSc from Tsinghua University and Zhejang University, in 2007 and 2004, respectively. His main research interests include the application of information and computing technologies to specific design issues such as knowledge modelling and retrieval, multidisciplinary collaborative simulation in a distributed environment, decision-making in design, sustainable design and service design. As well as publishing near 50 papers, he is an active member of a number of research communities such as Engineering Design, Sustainable Manufacturing and E-Business engineering.
