During this period, the Lab has been evaluated as Class-A laboratory for three times, and got the Golden Ox Award with an Advanced Collective Title given jointly by eight State Ministries including the State Planning Commission, State Education Ministry etc in 1994. The laboratory was evaluated as "one of top 10 excellent research labs in China" (American Journal of Science, November 1995). Professor Shi won Golden Ox Award with Advanced Personality Title by Ministry of Science & Technology in 2004.

Since 1990s, his works have been concentrated in the Visualization in Scientific Computing and Virtual Environment. Professor Shi has lead or participated in multiple National Natural Science Foundation projects, National 973 projects and 863 projects, National Eighth and Ninth Five-Year Plan for Sci-Tech Research & Development projects. The achievement of “Integrated Electronics Engineering CAD System for Layout and Photo-plotting” got the second grade prize of Sci-Tech Progress Award by the State Education Ministry in 1995. The achievement of “Theory and Applications of Distributed Parallel Graphics Processing” was honored the second grade prize of Sci-Tech Progress Award by Education Commission of Zhejiang Province. The achievement of “Integrated Image and Auditory Modeling and Real-time Rendering in Virtual Reality” got the Second Prize of National University Sci-Tech Award in 2001. In recent years his main research interests has turned into Image-based Modeling and Rendering and PC-cluster based Parallel Graphics Rendering and Tiled Display Technology. His group developed a hardware / software system for PC-cluster based Parallel Graphics Rendering and Tiled Display.
