Jiaoying Shi is a professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University which is located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province of China. Professor Shi is the Deputy Chairman of China Image and Graphics Association, the member of China CAD and Graphics Society under China Computer Federation, the Education Committee member of ACM SIGGRAPH. He is on the editorial board of international journal of Computer &Graphics, and Chinese journal of CAD & Graphics and Image &Graphics.
Shi was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, in 1937. He graduated from Department of Physics at Leningrad
University of USSR in 1960. He worked as an assistant Prof. at North-West
Polytechnic University in Xi'an from 1960 to 1963，doing basic research and
teaching in Nuclear Physics area. He worked as an assistant professor at
Shanghai University of Science and Technology in Shanghai from 1963 to 1973.
Then he joined the Radio Electronics Department of Zhejiang University in 1973.
In 1978 he transferred to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at
the same University. The project Minicomputer System for Weather Map Plotting in
which he participated was honored National Sci-Tech Conference Award in 1978. In
the years from 1982 to 1984 he worked as a visiting scholar at Department of
Electrical Engineering of University of Florida, USA as an adjunct associate
professor. At this period he studied and worked in the area of Computer Graphics
and Computer Aided Design.
After he returned from the USA, he rejoined Zhejiang University and has been working there until now. Since 1980 his research interests lay on Computer Aided Design and Computer Graphics Hardware fields. In late 1980s’ he lead a key project of National Seventh Five-Year Plan for Science and Technology Research and Development. As the achievements of the key project, the DGS-400 and DGS-800 Chinese & Graphics Workstations won the third grade prize of Zhejiang Sci-Tech Progress Award in 1989, UNIX-based CAD Support Software/Hardware System for Mechanical Products won the first grade prize of Zhejiang Sci-Tech Progress Award in 1991. The achievement of “The General Electronics Engineering (PCB) CAD System and CAD System for Color TV Design”, which he joined in, won the first grade prize of Zhejiang Sci-Tech Progress Award in 1989.
Prof. Shi was promoted as an associate professor in December of 1984, as a full professor in 1987. He served as the vice Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (1985-1988), the Director of University Division of Scientific Research Affairs (1988-1991), the University vice-chancellor for research and development affairs(1991-1996), and the Director of State Key Lab of CAD&CG for 10 years (1989-1998). During this period, the Lab has been evaluated as Class-A laboratory for three times, and got the Golden Ox Award with an Advanced Collective Title given jointly by eight State Ministries including the State Planning Commission, State Education Ministry etc in 1994. The laboratory was evaluated as "one of top 10 excellent research labs in China" (American Journal of Science, November 1995). Professor Shi won Golden Ox Award with Advanced Personality Title by Ministry of Science & Technology in 2004.
Since 1990s, his works have been concentrated in the Visualization in Scientific Computing and Virtual Environment. Professor Shi has lead or participated in multiple National Natural Science Foundation projects, National 973 projects and 863 projects, National Eighth and Ninth Five-Year Plan for Sci-Tech Research & Development projects. The achievement of “Integrated Electronics Engineering CAD System for Layout and Photo-plotting” got the second grade prize of Sci-Tech Progress Award by the State Education Ministry in 1995. The achievement of “Theory and Applications of Distributed Parallel Graphics Processing” was honored the second grade prize of Sci-Tech Progress Award by Education Commission of Zhejiang Province. The achievement of “Integrated Image and Auditory Modeling and Real-time Rendering in Virtual Reality” got the Second Prize of National University Sci-Tech Award in 2001. In recent years his main research interests has turned into Image-based Modeling and Rendering and PC-cluster based Parallel Graphics Rendering and Tiled Display Technology. His group developed a hardware / software system for PC-cluster based Parallel Graphics Rendering and Tiled Display.
He has supervised over 50 doctorate students and over 70 master students. He has published about 400 academic papers, more than 200 of which collected in SCI/EI Indexes. He has written three monographs, two textbooks, and four translation books.
