Computer aided breast plastic surgery and reconstruction

Abstract:  According to Cancer Registry Annual Report, the number of new cases of breast cancer in China is estimated to reach approximately 210,000 per year, and this number would increase at an annual rate of 2%. As a result, patients with one breast or both breasts removed would desire breast reconstruction. Additionally, China has more than 100,000 women undergone breast plastic surgery each year. In this study we will investigate key technologies of computer aided breast plastic surgery and reconstruction, including determination of anatomy position of breasts by utilizing 3D graphics and X ray images, abstraction of features on 3D breast models, accurate estimation of breast volume by multi-module data, construction of ideal 3D breast model based on individual data on patient’s body, construction of implant model data set by utilizing the sizes and specifications of each breast implant type. This study would extend the research area in computer aided plastic surgery and reconstruction, and significantly benefit accurate pre surgical measurement of breasts, description of breast shapes, correct selection of implants, prediction of reconstructed breasts, breast surgery planning and virtual surgery, etc. We will produce a prototype for breast plastic surgery and reconstruction, and continually test and evaluate this prototype to optimize its utility in the clinic. This study is a hot research topic in breast plastic surgery and reconstruction, and the system produced has potential applications nationwide.
