系列报告第24期:Direct Modeling for Computer-Aided Design

报告题目:Direct Modeling for Computer-Aided Design

Abstract: If you’ve ever flown on an airplane, driven a car, used a computer, or touched a mobile device, chances are you have used a product where Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software played a critical role in its creation.  CAD techniques have a successful history of revolutionizing the way people do engineering design and are continuously boosting today’s industry.  In this talk, I will share my work on a fundamental and long-standing problem in CAD: how to improve CAD modeling efficiency.  A promising solution called direct modeling to this problem is to be introduced.  The major issue in direct modeling will be discussed; the primary challenge is to be explained; and a solution to the issue will be provided.  To close this talk, some of the remaining issues that are of greatest interest to me (hopefully you are also interested) will be touched upon.

Bio: Dr. Qiang Zou is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Chinese University of Hong Kong (with Dr. Charlie C. L. Wang).  He received his Ph.D. degree from University of British Columbia (with Dr. Hsi-Yung Feng) in 2019, the master’s degree from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (with Dr. Jibin Zhao) in 2014, and the bachelor degree from Yangzhou University in 2011, all in Mechanical Engineering.  His research work revolves around geometric modeling, computer-aided design (CAD), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), with particular interests in fast geometric modeling for engineering design and optimal tool path planning for CNC machining and additive manufacturing.  He has published eight papers in the field of CAD/CAM, and some of them are on reputed journals like CAD.  He is the recipient of the UBC Departmental Scholar Award, 4YF Doctoral Fellowship, and Academic Research Award (from Liaoning Province), etc.
