Abstract:Topology optimization has been recognized as an important design method for additive manufacturing. It provides an effective means to automatically explore the large design space unveiled by the additive process, and to generate designs with superior structural performance. In this talk I will present some of our recent developments in this multidisciplinary research field. First, to accelerate the generative design of bone-like porous structures, we developed an efficient algorithm to generate lattice structures that are aligned with principal directions of optimized stress fields. This approach demonstrates the synergy of topology optimization and geometry processing, and mesh generation in particular. Second, motivated by advances in multi-axis additive manufacturing (e.g., wire and arc additive manufacturing) which enables fabrication along curved layers, we proposed a framework to concurrently optimize the structural layout and fabrication sequence. This novel concept, which we call space-time topology optimization, exemplifies the importance of integrating process simulation into structural design and process planning.
