Abstract: Functional assemblies refer to objects that combine multiple component parts into a structure/mechanism to achieve a specific functionality. Designing functional assemblies is a challenging task since we need to consider not only geometry of each individual part and their local joining, but also structural and functional performance of the whole assembly.
In this talk, I will describe the recent progress in computational design of functional assemblies with nontrivial shapes, topologies, and functionalities. I will focus on two recent research works: 1) interlocking assemblies that can be in equilibrium under arbitrary external forces and torques; and 2) mechanical assemblies that can achieve user-specified motions to entertain people. Finally, I will discuss the outlook of the field and present its open challenges.

Short Biography: Peng Song is an Assistant Professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) since August, 2019. Prior to joining SUTD, Peng was a research scientist in EPFL, Switzerland, an associate researcher in University of Science and Technology of China, and a research fellow in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Peng received his PhD in Computer Science from Nanyang Technological University in 2013. Peng’s research interests lie in computer graphics, with a particular focus on the modeling, processing, design and fabrication of digital 3D geometry. His research works have been published in several leading journals and conferences, including SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, IEEE TVCG, Eurographics, and ACM CHI.
