Abstract: As exascale computing architectures are being developed, the future generation systems will be much more constrained with respect to data movement and storage space. In order to support analytics of data generated from large-scale simulations, it is crucial to develop an in situ data processing workflow that can support both the online and offline data analysis and visualization needs.  An ideal situ workflow consists of a two-stage process: online processing and offline analysis. Online processing refers to handling simulation outputs during the simulation run, and storing only reduced data that are much smaller than simulation outputs. Offline analysis refers to analyzing and visualizing the reduced data to deliver insights into the simulation for scientific discovery. In this talk I will highlight our recent effort in developing an end-to-end in situ data processing and analytics workflow. This includes online data modeling using various types of distributions, sample-based offline scalar and vector field visualization algorithms, and interactive query and visualization interface for the reduced data. Several case studies will be presented to show the benefits of our approaches.
