报告题目:Visual Flow Computation and Its Applications
报告人:Dr. Xiaopei Liu

Abstract: In this talk, I will briefly introduce flow simulation and visualization techniques in computer graphics, with applications to other related fields. In particular, I will introduce our recent development of techniques on flow simulation based on the lattice Boltzmann method for both single-phase and two-phase flow phenomena, with application to physically-based graphical animation. In addition, I will also introduce our previous collaborative work with fluid dynamicists and theoretical physicists on the development and application of visual analysis for the study of flow structures, with a particular emphasis on turbulence and vortices. I will show our multi-scale decomposition and iso-surface visualization techniques for visualizing different turbulence scale structures, as well as the circulation-based techniques for visualizing superfluid vortices. I will also mention the importance of such graphical visualizations in the research of related fields in fluid dynamics and physics. In the end, I will summarize and share with our on-going projects for visual flow computation in the future.

Biography: Dr. Xiaopei Liu is an assistant professor at the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST), ShanghaiTech University. He is now with the Virtual Reality and Visual Computing (VRVC) center as well as the Data Science center of the school. He received his Ph.D. degree on computer science and engineering from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and later did his postdoctoral research as a Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, where he had a long-term collaboration with School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Institute of Advanced Studies in NTU.
Dr. Xiaopei Liu’s research interests are multidisciplinary on the areas of computer graphics, fluid dynamics, scientific visualization, parallel computing, as well as small unmanned aerial vehicle (SUAV) system and navigation. Currently, he mainly focuses on two research directions. One of his important research directions is on the computation, rendering and visualization of different kinds of fluid flows, for graphical, theoretical and industrial applications, where both classical and quantum flows are investigated. In addition, he is leading the unmanned aerial vehicle computing lab (UAV-CL) of ShanghaiTech University, doing system and research work on the design and implementation of SUAV, and applying and investigating vision-based techniques for intelligent navigation. He is also considering applying his flow simulation and visualization techniques for SUAV design in the future.
