报告题目: Anisotropic Mesh Adaptation via Higher Dimensional Embeddings

Abstract:  Anisotropic meshes are essential to deal with phenomena characterized by directional features. They oer a better compromise between computational eort and numerical approximation. How to generate anisotropic meshes is a challenging problem. The most common strategy is to consider a prescribed (discrete) metric tensorfield Mdefined over a mesh domain M. Each metric tensor M is a dxd symmetric positive definite matrix, which contains the desired anisotropic information. Then, a uniform mesh with equal (geodesic) edge length with respect to M is generated, see, e.g., [4, 6, 8, 5].
In this talk, I will present a new approach that is not based on a metric tensor eld. The basic idea is to increasing the dimension of the space which contains the real mesh domain, such that the anisotropic features in Rd becomes isotropic in Rn, where n > d [1, 7, 3, 2]. Then, a uniform mesh in Rn will correspond to an anisotropic mesh in Rd. The choice of the embedding map determines the resulting anisotropy of the mesh.

Bio: Dr. Hang Si is a senior researcher in Weierstrass Institute (WIAS) in Berlin. His main research interest is mesh generation and the discrete and computational geometry problems behind it. The goal is to develop efficient algorithms for automatically generating meshes suitable for numerical methods such as finite element and finite volume methods. He is the developer of the software, TetGen -- a Delaunay-based tetrahedral mesh generator. It is freely available for academic use at http://www.tetgen.org.
Hang Si received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Hangzhou University (now merged in Zhejiang University) in 1994, and his M.S. in Computer Science from Zhejiang University in 2002. He joined the research group Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing of WIAS in 2002. He received his Ph.D from the Institute of Mathematics of Technische Universitaet Berlin in 2008.
