Title:Physics-based sound rendering: from brittle fracture to interactive editing
Abstract:Collisions make noticeable sounds: a jazz drum playing by Max Roach, an agitated shopping cart plunging down a flight of stairs, or a falling piggybank breaking on the ground. Sound is everywhere in nature. But virtual worlds simulated by current simulation algorithms are still inherently silent. Sounds are added as afterthoughts, often using “canned sounds” which have little to do with the animated geometry and physics. While recent decades have seen the dramatic success of 3D computer animation, our brain still expects a full spectrum of sensations. The lack of realistic sound rendering methods will continue to cripple our ability to enable highly interactive and realistic virtual experiences as computers become faster. In this talk, I will introduce my attempts to change that. In particular, I will talk about my work toward realistic contact sound synthesis due to object collisions, such as rigid fracture sound, modal contact sound and acceleration sound. Simulating these sound phenomena raises lots of unique computational challenges. I will illustrate ways in which we have addressed them based on physical principles, mathematical approximations, and perception studies. No prior knowledge of sound rendering will be assumed.
Bio:Changxi Zheng is an assistant professor of Computer Science Department at Columbia University. His research spans physically-based animation, computational acoustics, scientific computing and robotics, with a focus on developing practical computational methods to produce realistic dynamics and multi-modal sensations. Changxi received his PhD in 2012 from Cornell University, where he developed a variety of physically based sound synthesis methods for computer animation. His work has been featured in various press coverage (NPR, BBC, Science Daily, New Scientist, etc.).
