Abstract: Piecewise smooth complexes, PSCs in short, are a natural way to express the well-known idea of a piecewise smooth surface as a complex whose constituent cells are smooth patches and ridges.  Two patches may meet at an arbitrarily small angle at a ridge.  In mesh generation, PSCs present all the difficulties of curved surfaces and all the difficulties of polyhedral domains. We present an algorithm for generating triangular surface meshes conforming to PSCs, using weighted vertices to protect ridges so that they are respected by the weighted Delaunay triangulation. The first guaranteed algorithm for piecewise smooth complexes with small angles appears in an article by Cheng, Dey, and Ramos, but it requires geometric computations that are very difficult to implement, such as feature size estimates.  Subsequent simplifications have been proposed in the articles by Cheng, Dey, and Levine and by Dey and Levine. The algorithm to be presented appears in our recent book, and it combines the ideas in these papers, adds further improvements, and corrects some previous errors.

Bio:Siu-Wing Cheng obtained his B.Sc. in Computer Studies from the University of Hong Kong in 1987 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 1992.  He is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He served as the Acting Department Head during 2013-14 and as the Associate Department Head from 2007 to 2011.  Prof. Cheng's major research interests include computational geometry, manifold reconstruction, mesh generation, and algorithms.  Recently, he has written a book Delaunay Mesh Generationwith Prof. Tamal Krishna Dey and Prof. Jonathan Richard Shewchuk, and this book embodies his mesh generation works in the past decade or so.Prof. Cheng is a PC-cochair of the 30th Annual Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG) in 2014 and a PC-cochair of the 24th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC) in 2013.  Prof. Cheng is an associate editor of the International Journal of  Computational Geometry and Applications, an advisory committee member of the International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC), and a board member of the Asian Association for Algorithms and Computation.
