Abstract:
Intelligent data analysis continues to be a critical challenge in the 21st Century. Our society is experiencing an “information big bang”. Due to accelerated acquisition of large high-dimensional data, unprecedented data volume virtually prevails in all business areas and personal activities. The arrival of new data brings a lot of opportunities for new knowledge discovery. However, difficulties in data transmission, storage and processing owing to the fast data increase are tremendous. To this end, new solutions are urgently needed to cope with the vast data volume and to allow for timely retrieval of valuable information. While significant advance has been achieved in highly automated data analysis, we are still far from being able to process data with full automation. To compensate for the limited capability of the automatic techniques, expert knowledge is often vital in order to find effective solutions. To this end, the recent surging interest in Visual Analytics (VA) demonstrates a research trend of human centered data processing. This presentation will focus on the research trend of VA and highlight the most critical challenges.

Bio of Speaker:
董峰,计算机视觉及图形学教授。1996 年获得浙江大学计算科学博士学位，并留校任教。1998年破格提升副教授。1998年赴英国参加合作研究。于2003年及2005年分别获得英国Lancaster大学及Brunel大学的讲师职位。2007年被任命为英国Bedfordshire大学教授。董峰教授从事多项有关计算机视觉，科学计算可视化及图形学的研究课题。近年来尤其致力于智能数据分析在可视化及图形学的开发和应用。在国际著名期刊及会议IEEE TVCG, IEEE CG&A, IEEE Visualization, Eurographics, CGF等上发表论文多篇。承担多项国家及欧盟科研项目。担任多个期刊，学术会议及科研项目的审阅及评估。
