Report title:Towards engineering assurance via Unified CAD and CAE Feature Interactions
Reporter: Professor Y.-S. Ma
Time: Friday, 5-20-2011, 2 pm
Place:Room 402, State Key Laboratory of CAD & CG, Library and Information Center Building B, Zhejiang University Zijin’gang Campus

Abstract: Most designers use CAD and CAE tools to model and evaluate their products. However, the representation schemes of CAD and CAE entities are not exchangeable. It is the bottleneck for design process integration in the common practice of the industry. This presentation explores the prospect of semantic modeling and feature oriented integration between CAD and CAE packages with an object -oriented multi-facet representation approach.  Application cases of CAD/CAE interactions, cyclic initialization of optimization, and component behaviors modeling and analysis are discussed. Since this topic is only part of an on-going research field, the conclusions are open for further debate. More research and collaboration are being pursued.
About the speaker: Y.-S. Ma is currently a tenured Associate Professor and registered Professional Engineer with the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada. He teaches capstone design projects, engineering economics and manufacturing processes. His main research areas include feature-based product and process modeling, CADCAM, and product lifecycle management. Dr. Ma received his B.Eng. degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing in 1986, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from UMIST, UK in 1990 and 1994 respectively. Before joining U of A, from 2000 to 2007, he had been an Associate Professor in the school of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is currently an associate editor of IEEE Transaction of Automation Science and Engineering, and actively serves the engineering informatics research community. He started his career as a Lecturer from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore in 1993, and then from 1996 to 2000, he was a Senior Research Fellow and Group Manager at Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech).
